Assistant Purchasing Manager – Residential Construction / Homebuilding
Location: Peachtree Corners, GA
Reports To: Vice President of Purchasing / Purchasing Manager
Compensation: $120,000 base salary + 15% performance bonus
Schedule: Full-Time | Monday – Friday | 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM | In-Office

POSITION SUMMARY
A leading regional residential homebuilder is seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Purchasing Manager to support departmental operations, vendor relationships, cost management, and team development. Working closely with the VP of Purchasing and Purchasing Manager, you will ensure efficient purchasing workflows, precise budget maintenance, and seamless construction timelines. As a key leadership figure within the department, you will mentor team members and step into full Purchasing Manager responsibilities as needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operations & Leadership: Assist with daily purchasing department operations, mentor Purchasing Agents through ongoing training, and assume acting department leadership during absences.
  • Budgeting & Cost Control: Review construction budgets, takeoffs, plan assemblies, and vendor pricing. Conduct weekly job start scrubs to verify PO accuracy, option pricing, and overall budget integrity.
  • Bidding & Vendor Management: Prepare bid packages, evaluate proposals for new communities, and update vendor contracts, scopes of work, and pricing agreements. Continuously source qualified trade partners to optimize pricing and quality.
  • Financial Analysis & EPOs: Analyze monthly job cost and variance reports to capture cost-saving opportunities. Review, negotiate, and approve Extra Purchase Orders (EPOs) within delegated thresholds.
  • Value Engineering & Field Engagement: Partner with Architecture, Construction, Sales, and Estimating to implement value engineering strategies. Regularly visit job sites to evaluate scopes of work, vendor performance, and product quality.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of purchasing experience in the residential homebuilding industry. Previous background as a Senior Purchasing Agent, Estimator, or equivalent leadership role required.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of residential construction materials, estimating, purchasing methods, and contract negotiation.
  • Software Skills: High proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Working knowledge of Hyphen HomeFront, BuildPro, or similar residential homebuilding software is strongly preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Business, Supply Chain, or related field preferred.
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional negotiation tactics, financial acumen, cross-functional problem-solving, and a team-oriented leadership approach.
